About Daman & Diu pollution control Board :
One of the major problems faced by the present day industrialized societies is Pollution. In simple terms, pollution can be defined as the presence of pollutants in the atmosphere. Pollution can be of any nature- air, water, radiation, sound, light etc and one cannot underestimate its ill effects. The growing number of diseases and general degradation of environment prompted the Government to take some concrete steps in this direction to mitigate the ill effects. Thus the Government of India has enacted three important legislations, which are as follows:
- The Water (Prevention & Control of Pollution) Act, 1974.
- The Air (Prevention & Control of Pollution) Act, 1981.
- The Environment Protection Act, 1986. For enforcing these above Acts and the rules, regulations and Notifications made there under, Pollution Control Committee (PCC) has been constituted jointly for the UnionTerritories of Daman & Diu and Dadra & Nagar Haveli. The total Geographical area of UT's of Daman, Diu and Dadra & Nagar Haveli is only 72, 40 and 600 sq kms. respectively. Non-Availability of large tracts of land suitable for establishing heavy industries, scattered human habitations all over the territories and inadequacy of crisis management infrastructure like ambulance and fire service have left little choice to the Administration and PCC but to restrict setting up of pollution industries, listed under the Notification as red/ banned list of industries. For promoting establishment of other permitted industries, to facilitate obtaining pollution consents and clearances, relevant information has to be disseminated. An endeavor is being made in this direction by creating a web site which contains information regarding environment requirements in these minuscule but beautiful territories.
